But should we stop there, or talk about yet another film filled with fashion and jewelry? Can you guess it? Here is a hint: Hathaway’s character, Andy Sachs, gets a makeover and sheds her oversized sweaters and flat shoes for Chanel thigh high boots and super chic outfit or her double Chanel necklace. Yes, we are talking about The Devil Wears Prada, in which Meryl Streep plays Miranda Priestly, a character based on Wintour. What all this is getting at is that the Met Gala, Wintour and fashion/glamorous jewelry are embedded into the history of New York City, with the trend-setting actresses rocking their outfits and jewelry on and off screen.

Speaking of which, Emily Blunt also did her part in commemorating Kaiser Karl in real life.

So here we have Hathaway, a Bulgari global ambassador who wore a Bulgari High Jewelry Monete necklace and bracelet in yellow gold set with a silver coin, which she paired with multiple diamond High Jewelry rings and a pair of Diva’s Dream earrings.

Rihanna wore a Bulgari High Jewelry necklace in platinum with five pear diamonds, 118 Akoya cultured pearls, seven pear-shaped diamonds, 109 round diamonds and 561 fancy shape diamonds, accented by pavé-set diamonds. Her earrings were floral Belperron from the current collection, which had the feeling of Chanel camelias. She also wore a vintage pearl Belperron necklace and a modern version of a Verdura Maltese cross cuff that was first designed for Coco Chanel by Fulco di Verdura when he worked for her.

These three truly captured the theme of the event and are style-setters both on and off the screen.

I only wish that some of their co-stars, who have been at the Met Gala in years past, had made an appearance so they could be part of this story, too.

YARA SHAHIDI WORE pieces exemplifying Cartier’s take on modernity, with a blend of luxury and cutting-edge design, to the London world premiere of Peter Pan and Wendy, in which she plays Tinkerbell. The live-action film is based on the animated 1953 film Peter Pan, a Walt Disney Pictures production directed by David Lowery.

Known for her role as the youngest daughter in the TV show “Blackish” and for her roles in film, Shahidi glimmered in an Alexander McQueen dress that featured a shimmering fringed hem and cutouts. In the photo above it was raining, and I assume she borrowed the black jacket to help her stay dry.

Cartier High Jewelry earrings

The Cartier earrings and ring provided just the right amount of jewels with the gown. While they may have seemed a departure for the jewelry house, if you look closely, they blended a range of techniques and periods into innovative designs.

The Cartier High Jewelry earrings, which featured 18K yellow gold, a center topaz, onyx, yellow, orange and white diamonds, combined the Art Deco inspiration the company is known for with a symbolic winged motif and a mosaic of stones. This is just the type of jewelry we want to see today—artistic but versatile, couture-inspired but wearable.

Shahida wore the earrings with a Les Berlingots de Cartier ring set in 18K yellow gold with a three-dimensional onyx (it also comes in other colors). It was finished with pyramid-shaped tips with diamond accents.

The jewels were just the type we like to see coming out of the centuries-old legendary houses. Cartier has always kept up with the times, and this jewelry is no exception. As for Shahidi, she wore it all well, and it’s no wonder she has also become an ambassador for the brand.

The sighting: Singer Doja Cat attended her first Met Gala this year and made a true splash by dressing like Karl Lagerfeld’s beloved cat, Choupette. She wasn’t the only attendee to make a sartorial reference to the famous feline, but she did it best.

The jewels: You’ve never seen a kitty cat costume with this many carats before!

Doja Cat is decked out in Messika diamonds. Her headpiece includes a 17 carat pear-shaped diamond and was designed personally by the brand’s artistic director, Valerie Messika. It’s a little tricky to see in photos, but the singer is also wearing a custom armband high on her right arm that features two more large pear shaped diamonds.

In addition to the custom headpiece and armband, Doja Cat is wearing large bracelets and at least four rings from different Messika High Jewellery Collections.

The trends: Is anything a trend when it’s part of a cat costume? When it’s this stylish, the answer is yes.

Doja Cat was not the only celeb to wear a necklace as a diadem, matched cuff bracelets, or an arm band high on the arm. Cardi B also wore a necklace across her forehead and even paired it with matched bracelets. Naomi Campbell also wore an arm band high on her arm.

A necklace across the forehead won’t be relevant for most occasions, but could work as bridal or prom inspo.

What do we think? It is objectively silly to show up to a high profile fashion event dressed as a cat. It’s not just the cat ears – Doja Cat is even rocking face paint and whiskers, and she gave several interviews where she only meowed. But in my opinion, the subtlety of the cat ears and the extreme seriousness of the jewelry takes this ensemble from comical to couture.

These diamonds are no joke. The headpiece, the arm band, the matching cuff bracelets! Everywhere you look, there are more exceptional diamonds. They jazz up the relatively simple gown and make absolutely clear to anyone watching that she’s not just a cat, she’s a high fashion feline.

Also, you should know that Doja Cat wore a whole different set of cat ears as part of her Met Gala afterparty ensemble. When Doja does a bit, she commits.

Judgement: 16/10 for mixing glamour and humor with panache.

ALTHOUGH THERE WAS something lacking in the realm of jewelry at King Charles’s coronation — namely, tiaras and coronets on the royal women — there was still a show of dazzling pieces. The event was pared down compared with prior coronations, but the jewels that Queen Camilla and Kate Middleton, princess of Wales, wore were handed down as generational jewels. Others, such as Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice, wore jewels from Garrard.

But let’s get to the jewels of Queen Camilla and Princess Kate:

Camilla sparkled in the coronation necklace that was originally created for Queen Victoria in 1858. It features 25 graduated diamonds and a massive 22.48-carat pendant known as the Lahore Diamond. It was designed by Garrard and worn by all the queens that followed, including Elizabeth II, for their coronations. The diamond earrings were also designed by Garrard for Queen Victoria and worn by Elizabeth II for her 1953 coronation.

Princess Kate honored her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, by wearing her diamond and South Sea pearl earrings. Kate had changed the more rounded pearls from these diamond tops to the South Sea baroque pearls from Diana’s Collingwood pearl earrings, She first wore these she wore to the coronation in their new incarnation to the BAFTA awards in 2019. From what I can tell, she wore them on many occasions after that. She also reportedly wore a diamond necklace that belonged to Queen Elizabeth: the George VI festoon necklace, created in1950 as a gift from King George VI for his daughter, the then-Princess Elizabeth. But it cannot be seen through the coronation robes.

Zara Tindall, Queen Anne’s daughter, also chose a family jewel for the occasion — her mother’s diamond ribbon and tassel brooch.

Although the event seemed less regal without the tiaras, I appreciated the generational jewels, particularly the necklace and earrings created for the icon of 19th century style, Queen Victoria. They still look as magnificent today as when they were created.

The sighting: Actress Amanda Seyfried attended the 2023 Met Gala in a custom Oscar de la Renta mini dress and Cartier jewels.

The jewels: Seyfried’s jewels for the night are all Cartier. She’s wearing a Cartier Agrafe ring on her right hand, a yellow gold piece with diamonds. But the scene-stealer here is that necklace.

The spectacular necklace is formed of many chains of gold that sparkle across the actress’s chest, held at each shoulder by rows of Cartier Agrafe elements in gold with diamonds.

There may be earrings in there too, but it’s impossible to tell under that fabulously floofy hair.

The trends: Lots of trends here! Necklaces with dramatic draping, disco influence, and fringes are the most prominent.

What do we think? This isn’t my favorite dress from the night…but I do think that the jewelry choice was absolutely genius. Anyone can wear a barely-there minidress with dramatic fringes, but to accessorize that dress with a huge, wonderfully dramatic necklace that goes with the dress so well that it’s hard to tell where one ends and the other begins is truly inspired glamour.

Most celebrities (or their stylists) wouldn’t have been brave enough to pair a big necklace with a dress like this, but it is so much cooler here than an understated piece would have.

Judgement: 14/10 for an extremely cool jewel choice.

Chopra Jonas, a Bulgari global ambassador,  stayed within the theme with her gown, a black ribbon in her hair and mismatched Bulgari diamond earrings. But we need to go back to when I received a press release from Sotheby’s a week before the event. It teased how this Bulgari Laguna Blu was its largest blue diamond and the most valuable gem from the brand ever to go up for sale. It was to be “first unveiled at the forthcoming Met Gala on 1 May, before going its sale during Sotheby’s Luxury Week in Geneva this May,” according to the release. The diamond will be sold unmounted.

And so for a week, I pondered who would be wearing the gem. I knew it would be an ambassador of Bulgari, but would it be Anne Hathaway or Zendaya? Only time would tell, as we also didn’t know for certain who would be at “the biggest fashion night out.”

And so I waited with bated breath, and there is it was on Chopra Jonas’ neck. I could go on about the attributes of the diamond, with an estimated value of over $25 million, but let’s talk about how Bulgari and Sotheby’s collaborated on a necklace that would complement Chopra Jonas’ look, stand out, speak to Bulgari’s aesthetics and honor Lagerfeld at the same time.

As aside, the diamond was designed as ring in a simple setting and stayed in the same European family after it was commissioned in 1970. So until Chopra Jonas wore it, it would have been seen only by a privileged few.

As far as the necklace design for the gala goes, the setting for this unmodified pear-shaped blue diamond, which received the highest grade for a blue diamond by the Gemological Institute of America was inspired by the bay laurel wreaths worn by Greco-Roman emperors.

“The shape of the necklace honors Rome with its interlocking diamonds. The design reinterprets the pattern with a contemporary air of movement and light. Diamonds are set in platinum, which, though denser than gold, exhibits extraordinary fluidity thanks to deft craftsmanship,” says a spokesperson for Sotheby’s.

Lagerfeld loved diamonds, and this remarkable rarity is one that would have put a sparkle in his eye behind his dark sunglasses.

The sighting: Model and actress Brooklyn Decker attended the 2023 Met Gala in a beautiful vintage Chanel dress and a pearl tiara! You know we need to talk about the jewels.

The jewels: The star of the show here is the spectacular Bubble Pearl Tiara by Sean Gilson for Assael. It features 35 South Sea cultured pearls and 5.44 carats of old mine cut diamonds.

Decker is also wearing Assael Akoya and Tahitian pearl strands with a cross necklace by Sylva & Cie.

The trends: This is such a good example of non-traditional pearls and pearls worn in casual contexts! Pearls have been hot for a minute now and this pearl-heavy Met Gala can only fan those flames.

What do we think? I have several layers of opinions here. First, the pearl tiara is incredible and I would wear it anywhere, anytime, for any reason. The tiara is perfect with the dress! They’re both whimsical, light, lovely, ethereal, and delicate.

Now, the necklaces. I am a fan of long pearls worn in a casual way, but I think that these multiple heavy strands together with the cross are too bulky a look for this light-as-air dress. If the dress were a gown of heavier material – like the ubiquitous tweed that was everywhere at this Met Gala – then it would have been a better backdrop for that heavy fall of pearls.

Long necklaces like this can also be an issue for those of us who are more voluptuous up top because the long strands end up falling unevenly as they take turns lassoing one side of the bosom at a time, creating an awkward, lopsided drape that doesn’t look good on anyone.

I love the dress and I love the tiara, but the ensemble would have been better off with either shorter, more delicate pearl necklaces that didn’t overlap the dress (or the model’s chest) or an even longer strand of pearls knotted in the middle to avoid the draping issue.

Judgement: 13/10 for a spectacular tiara as part of a look that could have been just a bit better overall.

The sighting: Country music icon Shania Twain recently walked the Country Music Awards red carpet in an ensemble the signer described as “extremely bold but effortless.” The highlight of the look was a very special pair of custom earrings.

The jewels: The showstopper here is Shania Twain’s diamond treble cleft earrings: a custom design that the singer created in collaboration with jewelry designer Guy Lemieux.

Twain told Instyle that she and Lemieux worked together to make sure the earrings would fall in exactly the right place on her neck.

The singer further accessorized her look with a Kallati bracelet and rings by Stefere, Le Vian, Candy Ice, and Guy Lemieux.

The trends: Statement earrings are a very popular form of red carpet jewelry at the moment! It’s a fun trend and I’m enjoying the results, especially on celebs like Twain, who aren’t afraid to accentuate their statement earrings with additional jewels.

What do we think? Is it a little on-the-nose to wear music-themed earrings to a music-themed event? Perhaps even a little tacky? Maybe…but when that event is the Country Music Awards and you are the legendary Shania Twain, this glamorously camp design feels perfectly on-pitch.

I also love that Twain paired these earrings with a very sparkly selection of rings – it kept the ensemble’s bling from getting lost when the earrings were covered by her hair.

Judgement: 14/10 for earrings that hit the perfect note for the occasion.

The sighting: When Kate Bosworth and Justin Long walked the Vanity Fair Oscar party red carpet, fans noticed that Bosworth was sporting a ring on that finger. The couple have since confirmed the rumors on Instagram: They’re engaged, and we have a new celeb engagement ring to admire!

The jewels: All we know for sure about this ring is that it is a beautiful solitaire with a large center diamond.

Hello! Magazine and Popsugar both ran a quote from Mike Fried of The Diamond Pro saying the ring appears to be a 10-carat solitaire worth $500,000. In contrast, jeweler Jessica Flinn told Harper’s Bazaar Arabia that the ring appeared to be 5 carats and likely worth a bit over $155,000.

Hello! Magazine referred to the stone as a round brilliant cut, but the couple have not confirmed any information about the ring.

I don’t think it’s a round brilliant – the way it reflects light in photos doesn’t feel like RBC to me. I think it’s a cushion or radiant cut, maybe even a luscious antique stone like an old mine.

The trends: What we know for sure about this ring fits the giant diamond/tiny band engagement ring trend, but bucks the biggest recent celebrity bridal trend by not being an oval diamond.

What do we think? I love this ring. It feels glamorous but also unfussy, which is the vibe that this very adorable celebrity couple emanate at all times.

But Becky, you might be wondering, why do you love this very simple celebrity engagement ring when you usually complain that simple celebrity engagement rings are boring?

A valid question, my friends. This one just floats my boat for some reason! Every time I see it, my brain goes, “Ooh, pretty.”

I give credit to the diamond itself: It’s not yet another ubiquitous oval, and the way it catches the light in photos makes me think it might be an interesting cut, either with unusual faceting or perhaps an antique diamond, just like my own engagement ring.

Judgment: 17/10 for a stunning celebrity solitaire

SINGER/SONGWRITER MAETA recently performed in a body-hugging spaghetti strap green/yellow dress and an armful of yellow gold bangles.

After years of the ear party, signet and stack rings and statement necklaces (all which are still going strong), bracelets are back, particularly armfuls of bangles in different widths and textures and often in mixed metals. Los Angeles-based, Indiana-born Maeta, the soulful contemporary R&B artist who has won music critics and fans with her intimate lyrics pulls off the look with just the right amount of ease and trendsetting style.

She is also wearing hoop earrings, which have become the go-to earring of multiple generations of women. Maeta’s pulled-back hair and large yellow gold hoops remind me of Sade in her prime.

But let’s get back to the bangles. She wears narrow to wider bangles mixed together on one wrist. The look is a winner as long as you don’t mind the clanging sound when they ride up and down your wrist. If you sit at a computer for work, less is more, as they tend to get in the way while typing, but you can definitely pile on more for a night out. You can also wear different styles and amounts of jewelry on both wrists for an unstudied bohemian feeling.

The bangle theme is one you can play with and create multiple looks.
