The trend of men wearing jewelry on the red carpet has taken off over the past five years. Watches and cufflinks are still important looks for a tux, but we’ve gone beyond that to the “man brooch,” which has continued to evolve into different motifs, periods and styles, along with more creative ways to wear them. Diamond necklaces and gold chains layered emerged as another look, as did symbolic rings and, for the rock star in you, rings on every finger.

It was no surprise when Lenny Kravitz received the Fashion Icon Award at the CFDA Fashion Awards. Kravitz has been cited for his sense of edgy, experimental rock ‘n’ roll style for as long as I can remember. He wore fingers full of rings by L’Enchanteur.
They seemed to be an eclectic mix of healing and spiritual gemstones and ancient and futuristic textures and shapes. They complemented Kravitz’s tendency to push the boundaries of style. Will this type of jewelry styling translate into a trend? I don’t think that men will take to walking around with stacked heavy rings on their fingers. But taken separately, each ring was a statement in itself and could be an inspiration for guys to wear bold, chunky rings that are genderless and also inclusive of a variety of demographics.

To prove my point, Robert Downey Jr. also chose to wear a ring to honor his friend, director Park Chan-wook, at the premier of his new mystery romance thriller Decision to Leave. Downey was there to support the talented director, with whom he will be working on the upcoming HBO series The Sympathizer. The ring was a Jacquie Aiche opal inlay Galaxy ring with chevron sides, and the necklace was iconic Aiche. An onyx inlay turquoise Crescent Moon and Sun pendant provided a bohemian feeling to what could have been a straightforward dapper style. These are welcome additions to the men’s jewelry game. Downey definitely took things up a notch.

Nicholas Braun was perhaps my favorite look of all of the variations on man brooches at the 2022 Emmy Awards, showing off a set of Fred Leighton Art Deco clips that he wore, in  modern twist, on the collar of his white shirt rather than the lapels of his tux.

Nicholas Hoult wore two necklaces close to the collar of his white shirt at the Emmy Awards. One was an antique sterling silver and paste riviere necklace from Briony Raymond, and the other was a yellow gold and diamond wide curb link necklace from Neil Lane Couture. You might think the antique paste (created in the 18th century to look like diamonds) and a wide curb link chain would not work together, but they did with a contemporary flair. Hoult finished off the look with a Jaeger-LeCoultre watch. The style was both dapper and masculine.

Austin Butler wore a vintage Cartier cliquet pin, circa 1928, in platinum and diamonds to the Met Gala. The jewelry made his all-black look pop and showed how men can mix vintage jewelry with contemporary clothes. Photo: Shutterstock.
