This year, awards shows went live again, the stars were out in full force, and the red carpets at film festivals such as Cannes and Venice were shimmering with a dazzling array of jewels. 2022 was a year in which celebrities as well as regular people wanted to dress up and feel a little glamour again while taking precautions and trying to find our new normal. Over the next five days, we look back on the best red carpet looks from events from throughout the year in different categories as we say goodbye to 2022 and head into 2023.

Let’s start with the best looks overall. On the whole it was a big year for diamonds in every category of jewelry. What could be more elegant, timeless and sometimes even daring, while adding sparkle to our lives, than modern, antique and vintage diamond jewels. Here are our picks for the best looks from head to hands.

Kate Moss wore rare Georgian jewelry from A La Vieille Russie at the Met Gala. This was a striking choice in which neither jewel took center stage; rather, they flowed seamlessly when worn together. The old mine cut diamonds created a subtle glow around Kate Moss’s nature beauty. Photo courtesy of Shutterstock.

Zendaya wore multiple Bulgari Serpenti bracelets climbing up both arms at the Academy Awards with Bulgari necklace, earrings and statement ring. What worked best with this look is that the bracelets became the focal point and the rest of the jewels complemented the look without seeming overdone. Photo courtesy of Shutterstock.

Selena Gomez at the SAG Awards imbued her diamond look with a youthful appeal. She wore a Bulgari High Jewelry Serpenti choker in white gold set with two pear brilliant cut emeralds and diamond pavé and multiple diamond stud earrings which did not detract from her radiance or the magnificence of the necklace. Ariana DeBose sparkled in De Beers diamond necklace, ring, bracelets and earrings at the Academy Awards. The diamonds dazzled against the red gown and were perfectly styled to the celebrity’s frame, neck, shoulders and arms. Photo courtesy of De Beers.

At the SAG Awards, Elle Fanning wore a Cartier necklace of a diamond chain suspending a pink pear-shaped morganite drop which twinkled under Fanning’s bowtie. The actress also wore a selection of Pasquale Bruni flower rings and a pair of vintage Harry Winston pearl and diamond cufflinks from Beladora. The message here was that anything goes — men in brooches and women in britches (not really britches). Fanning has proved that she can look just as dazzling in an androgynous look as in a princess gown.

At the Cannes Film Festival, Cindy Bruna wore an awe-inspiring Chaumet necklace and matching earrings with her powder puff pink Giambattista Valli gown, which was spectacular in its transformability. The front was a diamond bib style with a padparadscha sapphire pear shape drop that ranged in color between blush and sunset pinkish peach. The back was drapey and longer with a diamond pendant encasing a rare padparadscha sapphire. While I don’t usually go for matching sets unless they are vintage or antique, this one worked as it was dramatic and glamorous — worthy of a celebrity. Photo courtesy of Shutterstock.
